Fear of Change

"The fear of change is a great anchor that prevents human beings from navigating the sea of life."
Mychel Keppler

Anchor Cemetery on Praia do Barril, in the municipality of Tavira. This is an open-air memorial formed by more than a hundred rusty anchors planted in the sand dunes, arranged in rows as if they were tombstones. These anchors were not used to moor boats, but to secure the enormous nets used in the traditional tuna fishing with traps, which for many years was the basis of the local economy. When, in the 1960s, traditional fishing became unsustainable and the community abandoned the traps, the fishermen left the anchors on the beach — which today have become a symbol of the memory of this activity that shaped the life and culture of the Algarvian coast.
